and when you start to feel like things should have been better this year, remember the mountains and valleys that got you here.

This should be an “always reblog” because you never know who might need to see this.

little notes for when you’re sad:

  • you have always gotten back up from rock bottom on your own, it just took some time. bad times won’t last forever.
  • some days are unexpectedly better than others for no particular reason - the future is not completely bleak, there will be beautiful days sprinkled in no matter what you’re going through
  • it takes time to mend your heart, love yourself and grow into the person you hope to become. it’s ok to have hiccups along the way, it means you’re doing your best.
  • it’s possible to create a comforting & meaningful life for yourself with what you have at the moment. you may not see it, but sometimes we can be so busy comparing ourselves and wishing we had more things, but forgetting what we do have.
  • the future is bright, and holds wonderful things for you, though you may doubt it. the universe may surprise you, so don’t lose hope.

wholesome-suggestion:

some days you are going to be sad and you will feel helpless. this is okay, don’t pressure yourself to feel happy. please be gentle with yourself when this happens. stay patient the lows are only temporary and they allow us to feel the true extent of happiness when it comes.

dykejedi:

sometimes your reason for living can be the stupidest little thing. like “i don’t want my pet to get sad because they miss me” or “i want to know how this television show ends.” and sometimes, that’s enough.

i hope the year ahead brings you warmth, light, love. i hope you get to smile often, i hope you grow to feel better about your beautiful self, even if a little. i hope you meet new friends, i hope you love your old friends. i hope you are happier, you deserve to be.

push yourself to get up before the rest of the world - start with 7am, then 6am, then 5:30am. go to the nearest hill with a big coat and a scarf and watch the sun rise.

push yourself to fall asleep earlier - start with 11pm, then 10pm, then 9pm. wake up in the morning feeling re-energized and comfortable.

get into the habit of cooking yourself a beautiful breakfast. fry tomatoes and mushrooms in real butter and garlic, fry an egg, slice up a fresh avocado and squirt way too much lemon on it. sit and eat it and do nothing else.

stretch. start by reaching for the sky as hard as you can, then trying to touch your toes. roll your head. stretch your fingers. stretch everything.

buy a 1L water bottle. start with pushing yourself to drink the whole thing in a day, then try drinking it twice.

buy a beautiful diary and a beautiful black pen. write down everything you do, including dinner dates, appointments, assignments, coffees, what you need to do that day. no detail is too small.

strip your bed of your sheets and empty your underwear draw into the washing machine. put a massive scoop of scented fabric softener in there and wash. make your bed in full.

organise your room. fold all your clothes (and bag what you don’t want), clean your mirror, your laptop, vacuum the floor. light a beautiful candle.

have a luxurious shower with your favourite music playing. wash your hair, scrub your body, brush your teeth. lather your whole body in moisturiser, get familiar with the part between your toes, your inner thighs, the back of your neck.

push yourself to go for a walk. take your headphones, go to the beach and walk. smile at strangers walking the other way and be surprised how many smile back. bring your dog and observe the dog’s behaviour. realise you can learn from your dog.

message old friends with personal jokes. reminisce. suggest a catch up soon, even if you don’t follow through. push yourself to follow through.

think long and hard about what interests you. crime? sex? boarding school? long-forgotten romance etiquette? find a book about it and read it. there is a book about literally everything.

become the person you would ideally fall in love with. let cars merge into your lane when driving. pay double for parking tickets and leave a second one in the machine. stick your tongue out at babies. compliment people on their cute clothes. challenge yourself to not ridicule anyone for a whole day. then two. then a week. walk with a straight posture. look people in the eye. ask people about their story. talk to acquaintances so they become friends.

lie in the sunshine. daydream about the life you would lead if failure wasn’t a thing. open your eyes. take small steps to make it happen for you.

This is all really good advice for dealing with long term depression and anxiety. It’s not gonna magically cure you, but I’ve pushed myself to incorporate a few of these things into my day to day routine and it helps

I think the reason I enjoy Ghibli so much is it romanticizes the little things. It makes me want to bake, study, clean the house, garden, and more while listening to happy music and occasionally picking wildflowers and lying in the grass. It helps me find joy in day-to-day life and that’s honestly sooo important for my mental health.

Hayao Miyazaki has said on numerous occasions that he wants children to know that even when the world seems harsh and life is hard, it is always still worth living, and there is always something beautiful in it.

That mental health boost is intentional and Miyazaki wants you to believe that you should continue to live, even if just for those little things.

lovelysuggestions:

Fall in love with the world around you. Fall in love with the sound of birds, with thunderstorms, with the little flowers that grow against odds in random places. Fall in love with the people and places you can build a home in.
